FSSAI Launches Nationwide Surveillance Study on Milk and Milk Products to Curb Adulteration
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a nationwide surveillance study on milk and milk products to ensure food safety and curb adulteration. The exercise, which began this month, will cover 766 districts across the country and over 10,000 samples will be collected. The study is expected to be completed by October and the report will be submitted to the health ministry by December.
The study will cover the following milk and milk products:
- Milk
- Khoa
- Chenna
- Paneer
- Ghee
- Butter
- Curd
- Ice cream
The samples will be tested for adulterants, normal quality and compositional parameters, contaminants, antibiotic residues, and microbiological indicators.
The FSSAI has conducted five surveys on milk and milk items since 2011. In 2022, the regulator conducted a milk survey in 12 states, including 10 where Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) was prevalent.
The FSSAI is hopeful that the findings of the study will help them develop and implement effective food safety measures to protect consumers from the health risks associated with adulterated milk and milk products.
The study is a significant initiative undertaken by the FSSAI to ensure the safety and quality of milk and milk products in India. The findings of the study will be valuable for developing and implementing effective food safety regulations and standards.
